Electrolytes are salt ions, specifically sodium, potassium and magnesium found in the fluids of our body: blood, plasma and tissue fluids
They are necessary for the proper functioning of the body. Electrolytes carry an electrical charge, so they can affect blood pH and muscle function. They are responsible for maintaining voltage in cell membranes and transmitting electrical (nerve) impulses to other cells. Mineral salts - sodium, potassium, magnesium regulate and balance the flow of water on both sides of the cell membrane. Physical exercise is known to increase mineral loss. We also lose them when the body fights infections, as well as in hot weather.
Symptoms of electrolyte deficiency include: dizziness, general weakness, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, muscle tremors. Fluid loss also puts strain on the heart and lungs.
Viridian's Sports Electrolytes contain all the essential electrolytes in ionic form, as well as a wide range of other trace and ultra-trace elements. Ionic refers to a mineral that is ionically charged (attached to a negatively charged mineral complex). It is important that electrolytes are present in ionic form, thanks to which they are better absorbed.
In a study conducted on the importance of electrolytes for proper hydration of the body, 8 participants consumed pure water, and the other 8 participants consumed water with added electrolytes. Adding the electrolyte to plain water reduced the total fluid level required for optimal hydration compared to the water-only group. Water containing electrolytes also reduces fatigue during prolonged exercise.
Recommended intake: 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) per 1 liter of water.
